SEEK Updates Privacy Policy to Use User Data for AI Training

Employment marketplace SEEK has updated its privacy policy to include the use of user data for training artificial intelligence (AI). The change was noticed by users on social media platform Mastodon, who pointed out that SEEK had copied a similar move made by LinkedIn.

No Opt-Out Option

Unlike LinkedIn, SEEK does not appear to offer an opt-out option for users who do not want their data used for AI training. The updated policy, which was first noticed on October 15, 2023, states that SEEK may use user information "within artificial intelligence and machine learning systems to tailor features and personalise your experience."

Uses of AI

The policy specifies several uses of AI, including:

  • Scoring candidates against each other for job listings
  • Scoring how likely a candidate would be approachable for a job
  • Suggesting questions to ask a candidate

SEEK's History with AI

While this may be the first time SEEK has mentioned AI in its privacy policy, the company has been using AI for several years. According to its annual reports, SEEK has been using AI since at least 2017 to identify language in job ads that might discourage women from applying for jobs.

Investment in AI

SEEK's most recent annual report states that the company is investing in areas including AI to maintain market leadership positions and improve profitability. However, the report also flags the use of AI as a potential risk, citing the need to protect personally identifiable information and sensitive data.

User Reaction

Users on social media have expressed concern about the update, with some wondering why they were not given the option to opt-out of having their data used for AI training. Others have questioned the ethics of using user data in this way.
