Lagos Set to Host GITEX Nigeria 2025 Amidst Growing Tech Talent
Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadir Obafemi Hamzat, has announced the state government's commitment to hosting the GITEX Nigeria conference in September 2025. He emphasized that there has never been a more opportune moment for the tech sector to establish its presence in Africa, particularly in Nigeria, where a surge in technological talent and innovation is currently taking place.
Dr. Hamzat made this statement during a meeting with Trixie LohMirmand, CEO of Kaoun International, and her management team at the Lagos Pavilion during GITEX 2024 in Dubai. He highlighted Lagos as a fertile ground for tech and innovation, stating that the state government and the broader tech ecosystem in Nigeria are eagerly anticipating the arrival of this global tech showcase.
"The Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration is purposefully driving technology as a key component of the state’s development initiatives," Dr. Hamzat remarked. He pointed out the ongoing "Art of Technology" (AOT) initiative, which is now in its fifth year and has successfully identified numerous young entrepreneurs in the IT and innovation sectors, fostering new business ventures that contribute positively to the local economy.
"We’ve observed an astonishing number of young entrepreneurs in Lagos State. While we can't bring everyone to Dubai, hosting GITEX in Lagos will allow other nations to witness our potential firsthand," he added.
Dr. Hamzat underscored the impressive capabilities of young innovators in Lagos, who are already creating tangible solutions to real-world problems. He shared inspiring stories of children as young as ten years old using coding skills to help their parents sell products, exemplifying the transformative power of technology and innovation.
"The enthusiasm among these young talents is remarkable. We aim to leverage events like GITEX Nigeria to connect our abundant talents with global opportunities," he stated. He also expressed a desire to integrate technology with Nigeria's vibrant entertainment industry, highlighting its significance as a burgeoning sector.
Trixie LohMirmand echoed the importance of technology, stating, "Technology is a necessity for global survival, not a luxury." Recalling her previous visit to Nigeria, she noted the impressive work being done by young Nigerians despite limited resources. LohMirmand emphasized GITEX Global's commitment to connecting Nigeria with untapped opportunities in the tech sector and highlighted the need for government support in logistics and security for a successful event in Lagos.
GITEX, the world's largest technology exhibition, facilitates connections between industry leaders, governments, startups, investors, and corporate buyers. Held annually at the Dubai World Trade Center, the expo showcases rapid technology-driven transformations shaping economies across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. This year marks the fourth time Lagos State has participated in this significant global event, with previous attendances enhancing the region's investment landscape and supporting local tech startups.
As Lagos prepares for GITEX Nigeria 2025, the focus remains on harnessing the immense potential of its young innovators and showcasing the state as a burgeoning hub for technology and innovation on the African continent.
