Elon Musk's Grok AI was pretty excited Trump won the 2024 election. Here's what else AI chatbots had to say.

The 2024 U.S. presidential election introduced voters to AI-enabled tools for election information. Perplexity AI launched an "Election Information Hub" to help voters with logistics, ballot details, candidate positions, and live updates. ChatGPT directed users to credible sources like the Associated Press and Reuters for real-time information, a move highlighted in OpenAI’s blog on global election integrity.

Throughout Election Day and the following morning, Business Insider tested various AI platforms—OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4, Google Search and Gemini, Microsoft’s CoPilot, and X’s Grok—to evaluate their responses to election-related queries. While most tools took a cautious stance, Grok’s unique “fun” mode featured playful, cultural references, including nods to “Vogon” characters and space themes. This mode also prioritized Trump-related posts, a choice reflective of the user base on the platform.

ChatGPT and CoPilot avoided election results, directing users to trusted sources. When asked repeatedly about the election, Google Gemini responded by emphasizing the risk of AI inaccuracies and referred users to Google Search for real-time data. Meanwhile, CoPilot chose to sidestep the topic entirely, encouraging users to seek information from reliable news outlets.

Perplexity AI offered a heavily sourced approach, displaying election-related news at the top and contextual data on trends such as gender divides and key battleground states. Kento Morita, a former Google Gemini designer, remarked on the growing importance of purpose-built AI tools like Perplexity, which aim to deliver quality information tailored to specific domains like elections.

As AI becomes more integral to public discourse, the role these tools will play in future elections is just beginning to unfold.
